What a great day on Harriman Reservoir otherwise known as Lake Whitingham. The reservoir is the largest body of water to sit entirely within Vermonts borders. (Half of Lake Champlain is in NY). It is more than eight miles long and has nearly 28 miles of winding coast line. The Reservoir was created to generate electricity from the dam at the south end. The surrounding views of the hills and green mountains is beautiful. We didn’t stay for sunset but it must be breathtaking.
Harriman Dam is a hydroelectric dam in Windham County, Vermont in the town of Whitingham. The water from the dam flows through a penstock to a power generation plant in the adjacent town of Readsboro.“
We rented a Bayliner from High Country Marine located on RT 9 a few miles west of Wilmington VT. They could not have been more friendly and helpful! Some of their prices and types of rentals are below. Our son Griffin and their yellow lab named Griffin hit it off immediately.
Our rental included fuel and a tube and tow line. Big hit with the kids! Although it was a busy holiday the boat traffic was very manageable since the Lake is sooo big. No problem doing figure 8’s and loops with the kids on the inflatable. The boat traffic was mostly made up of pontoon boats, sailboats and kayakers. There are tubers and paddle-boarders closer to shore.
I suggest renting for four hours as it was perfect to tube, see the entire lake and dam and then a stop for lunch while enjoying the viw. We highly recommend when staying in Wilmington, or Basecamp @ Mount Snow.
